Husband sets wife on fire at a party

Love is said to be the fire of life that neither consumes nor purifies; but for 35-year-old Janeth Odehgbe, hers was a different case as she has been set on fire by her husband following disagreement over her collecting a cup of wine from another man during a party they both attended.
Recounting her ordeal in the hand of her 39-year-old husband, Mr Kehinde Adesanmoye, Janeth told Crime Alert that on September 11, 2012 around 10 pm, her husband poured petrol on her as she was preparing Indomie noodles for a customer and fire caught her immediately. She was nearly consumed by the fire but for passers-by that rescued her.

She said, “I saw him coming towards me, as he got nearer, he ordered my customer to leave and as I tried to run for my dear life, he poured petrol on me and fire caught up with me immediately. Passers-by rescued me and ran after him to fight him, but immediately they noticed it was him, they all went to their various homes. Then some of them took me to the Police station and from there I was taken to Peaceful Convalescent Center, Alhaji Obe Street, Ejigbo Lagos.”

Public Defender Office set up in Edo state.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who stated this on Monday at the unveiling of the Edo State High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, said too many people were being victimised and intimidated but were unable to fight for their rights.
The governor said: “Just recently, the police in the state arrested an innocent man and charged him for murder without any convincing evidence.
“I have now decided to set up a public defenders unit that will provide free legal aid to all those who are victims of police abuse of power or by any functionary of the state.
“Government may not be able to deliver food to all the citizens but government must not tamper with the citizens’ rights.

Curfew suspended in Mubi, Adamawa state

The Adamawa Government has relaxed the 24-hour curfew imposed on Mubi town in the past three days.
A statement by Malam Maijama’a Adamu, the Director, Press Affairs to the State Governor, said people could now move from 6 a.m to 3 p.m.
The statement said the movement was however within Mubi town alone, to allow residents make purchases as no movement would be allowed into or out of the town.
It would be recalled that the curfew was imposed by the government to enable security operatives conduct house-to-house searches in some wards.
This had followed series of killings and attacks on communication masts in the commercial town.
The Brigade Commander, 23rd Armour Brigade, Yola, Maj.-Gen. John Nwaoga, while speaking on the security operation in the town, said many arrests had been made.
“Weapons, including guns, ammunitions and explosives, have also been recovered in the on-going exercise,’’ he said.(NAN)

Opposition won’t allow PDP return after 2015’

The National Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, spoke to journalists in Ilorin on some national issues. Success Nwogu was there.
There is the feeling that the ambition of some stalwarts of the parties involved in the merger talks will stall the realisation of the proposed merger of ACN, What is the update or extent of the merger development?
Clearly the PDP is very jittery. Honestly there is no alternative to pushing out the PDP. IfNigeriawants to survive as a corporate entity, the PDP must be given the boot. I think that the leaders of the opposition (when I say opposition, it is not all parties that are not in power that are in opposition.) There are some political parties that are not in government but they are even more PDP in their thoughts and actions. But I believe that the ACN, CPC and ANPP have come to the realization that posterity will not forget us, if we allow PDP to remain one day more in power after

PDP raises alarm over Osun mining licence

Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm and accused the Rauf Aregbesola-led Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) government of commencing the process of selling the state’s solid minerals mining licence to some leaders of the ACN based in Lagos.
In a statement issued by its Director of Media and Strategy, Diran Odeyemi, the PDP said: “We are not surprised at the latest move by Aregbesola to sell our asset, because as at the last time, he sold several hectares of land in Osun State to Lagos State government, people said PDP was crying wolf, but we will not be deterred in exposing this government as an expansion of Tinubu’s assets.”
Going down memory lane, the PDP said the state, under the former governor; Olagunsoye Oyinlola, applied for and was granted a mining licence, which conferred on the state the right to mine solid minerals in any part of the country by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) which conducted the bidding sessions.

tragedy in Bauchi State as bomber attacks catholic church

The ugly spectre of bombing of churches reared its head on Sunday as a suicide bomber attacked St. John’s Catholic Cathedral in Wunti, Bauchi, directly across from the Bauchi Township Stadium, killing an unspecified number of people and injuring others.
The spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaib, who confirmed the development in an SMS to PUNCH, said the dead and injured had been taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.
Some accounts said a number of people died when the bomber hit the gate of the church around 9a.m.
However, Shuaib said, “This is to confirm that only the suspected suicide bomber died from the explosion in Bauchi while three injured victims were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.”
The spokesman for the state police command, Hassan Auyo, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the casualty figure was being compiled.
Bauchi has been hit by a number of bomb attacks and murders linked to the Boko Haram sect in the last few months.

Sunday Ehindero remanded in Kuje prisons

Talk about having a taste of one’s own medicine. After sending so many people to jail, its time to go join them. How sad.
The Former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero has been remanded in Kuje prisons for charges of embezzling and misappropriating funds while at the helm of affairs. Ehindero is on trial for allegedly embezzling N16 million meant for the police force. He and a former Commissioner of Police in charge of Budget, John Obaniyi, were, on Friday, docked before an Abuja High Court.
There have been several versions of the actual amount misappropriated by the duo during their tenure. Daily Times reports that the money was the interest that accrued to N567 million donated to the police, for the procurement of arms, ammunition and riot control equipment, by the Bayelsa State Government. Tribune claims that they misappropriated about N558 million while The Nation says they misappropriated about N574.4 million Police fund while in office.
Furthermore, they were accused of placing another N200 million from the donation in a fixed deposit account at the defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc where it yielded N6.5 million. They allegedly converted the interests that accrued from the two fixed deposits to their personal use.
They were arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over a six count-charge of criminal conspiracy and misappropriation Police funds while in office.
Both men pleaded not guilty.
The trial judge, Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi had granted the former police chief bail in the sum of N10 million and was to also provide a surety in like sum.
But when he failed to meet the bail applications by Friday evening, he was sent to Kuje Prisons to spend at least the next 48 hours, until Monday, with other prisoners.
Ehindero succeeded Tafa Balogun, who was also convicted for corruption, as Inspector General of Police. He served his tenure between 2005 and 2007.
